Natural habitat of Cycas species in Australia

The Australian species of the genus Cycas are found across the northern extreme of the country, roughly described by the darker green area on the map above. Growing characteristics and requirements of the plants vary according to their natural habitat. Species endemic to inland environments prefer a drier climate and are more susceptible to fungal diseases the closer to the coast they are grown.

Additionally, the further south one proceeds from the native habitat, the less likely cultivation will be successful.
